From the day we became independent, our country has seen a range of political rulers. From the foreign educated high born then, to the diametrically opposite today.
And despite 60 years of self governance, we have 40% illiteracy. 55% are unemployed. 30% live below the poverty line. The country is filthy and squalid. Power cuts are widespread. Lawlessness and corruption are rampant. Death due to hunger and starvation is common. Precious heritage is being senselessly destroyed. The Indian passport is a liability. The young want to flee the country! Yet, the political class is rich beyond belief and drowned in mesmerizing opulence. Dynastic rule is unashamedly propagated. Winning the election has become an end in itself. There is not even the semblance of an objective beyond that. And sadly this has come to be accepted.
The “ruling” class is completely and absolutely cut off from reality. Men and women at the top have not physically sat with a common Indian for decades. Drunk with power, blinded by the surrounding layer upon layer of bootlicking sycophants and immersed in a cocoon of lavish luxuries for every human desire, they are reduced to uncouth, self centred, megalomaniac despots. Finally, the unconstitutional “VIPism” and the ugly and equally ridiculous “security cover” that accompanies it, completes the picture of formally legitimizing the thick layer of insulation from the wretched common Indian.
Solution
A democratic paradigm shift, driven by “professional Indians”, is urgent. I think the time has come for the 200 million or so professional Indians to “roll up their sleeves and dirty their hands”. I think the time has come for professional Indians to set up a political party, win elections and form a government. I believe that is perhaps the only way the unrelenting morass of ineptitude, incompetence and corruption our country is sinking into can be arrested.
Challenge
The educated middle class professional Indians are however on the fringe of the political system – faceless, powerless and vastly outnumbered. To become part of the political process that will give them an opportunity to govern, they must set out an agenda of what they will accomplish, should they get elected.
That agenda is this Manifesto of the Professionals Party of India.
